DES MOINES, IA - Today, Dubuque native and union carpenter Matt Robinson (D) filed his nomination petition for the Democratic nomination in Iowa House District 72 with the Secretary of State’s office.

A sizable group of union members joined Robinson as he delivered his paperwork and 139 signatures. The group included Derek & Kristi Duehr (Carpenters Local 678), Felicia Hilton (Mid-American Carpenters), Royce Peterson (Carpenters Local 1260), Rhea Pierce & Amy Hageman (Carpenters Local 2060), and the former president of the Iowa Federation of Labor, Sen. Tom Townsend.

“I started this campaign because I believe that working people deserve to have a voice in the Iowa House,” Robinson shared. “I was so heartened to be joined by so many brothers and sisters in Labor as I filed my paperwork today. I am running for the folks who are just trying to pay the bills and put food on the table, so it was an honor to have so many working folks join me today as I officially put my name on the ballot.

When asked what his priorities would be if elected in November, Robinson shared that he wants to work to lift wages for all Iowans.

“Working-class people do not get a fair shake in Des Moines,” Robinson said.  “Just look at the legislature’s inaction on income.  We have a minimum wage that is ready to graduate from high school, for 18 years, it has been $7.25 an hour. This isn’t a matter of getting by; this is a matter of survival. If you are a minimum wage earner, you are starving right now. And that is keeping the wages of every Iowan down. When I am in Des Moines, I won’t settle for anything less than an $ 18-an-hour minimum wage.

Robinson will now appear on the June primary ballot. The winner will face the incumbent, Jennifer Smith, in the November election.
